What To Do When Printer Ink Cartridges Run Dry

Printer ink cartridges are part of the necessary supplies for office computer systems, and they need to be replaced or refilled regularly to keep the printer working. Different manufacturers have a slightly different design of cartridge, although most of them operate in a very similar way. You can buy replacements either from the manufacturers, or from other suppliers, and in some cases you can even have the cartridge refilled.

Printer cartridges have constantly been a source of controversy, as they are often incredibly expensive. The major printer manufacturers follow a system where they make little or no profit on the printer itself, but continuous profits from the cartridges and accessories they sell later. It is even believed that they are prepared to take a loss on some models due to the profits they can make from selling replacement cartridges. The high price of replacement materials has inevitably created a market of third party suppliers trying to undercut the prices of the brand name products. As this market represents a serious threat to the profitability of their main business model, the established suppliers have been quick to seek legal channels where they can claim back their exclusivity.

There are different types of cartridges, but most operate in a similar way. This is true of Brother inkjet cartridges, HP inkjet cartridges, and Canon inkjet cartridges. Cartridges for Lexmark printers also follow a similar pattern and design. The only ink cartridges which are substantially different are Epson ink cartridges, as they don't even use the same method of forcing the ink out onto the paper. As a practical matter, though, there is little difference to the buyer as the cartridges for each model are not interchangeable in any case. You need to have the cartridges from the manufacturer of the printer you use, or a near identical copy.

The most obvious way of obtaining the printer ink cartridges you need is to buy the replacement product either directly from the manufacturer, or from an agent of the manufacturer which stocks the product. This will not be the cheapest way of obtaining what you need, but it will give you a far better chance of a satisfactory result. If you are running a business where you are creating a large amount of printed material on an ongoing basis, any product which leads to a greater number of printer errors and ruined sheets is going to waste far more money than it saves.

There is no doubt that this is the most expensive option, and as such it may not suit everyone. An amateur printer who is simply looking to produce a few sheets every now and then will probably be better advised to try one of the cheap replacement options, especially if the quality of the print is not extremely important. The third party solutions will nearly always be of a poorer quality, but they can be good enough for most purposes. Third party ink cartridges can be found easily in shopping malls or through the Internet.

You have another alternative, which the manufacturers would much sooner you did not take, but which is actively being promoted in many places as being the most environmentally friendly alternative. This is the option of taking a cartridge to a store in a local shopping mall which will offer you a refill. The price of this will vary depending on exactly what you need. If you only need a replacement for the black ink section of the cartridge, the expense will be considerably less than if you need the color sections refilling as well.

The problem of used printer ink cartridges is a serious one, as it puts a lot of waste plastic material into landfill sites and causes high environmental pollution. This is one of the reasons why there are many campaigns aimed at keeping cartridges out of landfill sites. The refilling of cartridges may not be popular with the manufacturers who want you to buy new ones, but it is popular with charity groups who ask for donations of used cartridges. These groups are able to save money from the refills and they are also able to serve the environment by recycling plastic material.

The easiest way to make your choice as to how to manage your printer ink cartridges is to do your research online. You will easily be able to see what the manufacturer has available for your model, whether it is monochrome or full color. A little further research will reveal the alternative suppliers of cartridges for your model, which can save you money even if you are prepared to accept a slightly reduced print quality. You will also be able to do a local search to find places where you can have existing cartridges refilled, giving you the full range of choices for replacing your printer ink cartridges.
